How to Conduct a Literature Review (Health Sciences): Reference Management

A guide on how to get started developing research questions

Adding Bibliography Manager - EndNote

What is EndNote?
EndNote is a reference management software that allows you to:
  • Organize all your reference materials in a searchable personal library.
  • Use the EndNote sync command to synchronize your references in up to three personal computers, your EndNote web library, and an IPad or IPhone.  (You must own and be a user on all three computers)
  • Share a designated synced library with up to 400 co-authors and colleagues.
  • Easily cite your references and create formatted citations, bibliographies, or independent reference lists.

EndNote Online (also known as EndNote Web)
  • The web component of the EndNote reference management system and bibliography creation software.
  • EndNote 20 and 21 users can synchronize all the references in their desktop library to their online library.

Create a free EndNote Online account (off-campus users will be prompted for their eRaider credentials).

EndNote 21 (Desktop) Installation Instructions

Before Installation

  • If you are installing on a TTUHSC El Paso-owned computer and you are not an administrator (this is common) then you will need to contact TTUHSC El Paso IT or your departmental IT staff to complete the installation.

  • If you have already installed a free trial version of EndNote, you must uninstall it before proceeding.
  • After installation, expect additional EndNote updates to download and install.

Installation

  • Use your TTUHSC eRaider to log in and obtain the product key.
  • Download and run the EndNote installer. Enter the product key when prompted.

RefWorks

When exporting citations from the CINAHL database you will be presented to use two options; please use ProQuest ReWorks. This version works better, since the TTUHSC El Paso Library has a current subscription.

What Is RefWorks?

RefWorks allows users to create personal databases and use them for a variety of research activities. References are quickly and easily imported from text files or online databases. The databases can then be used to manage, store and share the information. Users can automatically insert references from their database into their papers and generate formatted bibliographies and manuscripts in seconds.

Why use a web-based research management system like RefWorks?

RefWorks is accessible at any time from any computer with an internet connection. It can be used with any major web browser on multiple platforms, including Windows, Mac and Unix. References can be imported quickly and easily from many online database systems or created manually, then easily shared online with colleagues.
