This guide will provide links to medical resources available on the web. The resources are educational and should be used to supplement information provided by healthcare providers, not intended to replace it.

Cancer

  • American Cancer Society - Website features: news, information on types of cancer, patient services, treatment options, sections on children with cancer and living with cancer, cancer statistics.
  • Breastcancer.org - Website features: tips for lowering risk, information on symptoms and diagnosis, news and research, library of terms, interactive discussion lists, treatment options, and downloadable brochures.
  • Cancer Care - Website features:  online support groups, webcast/telephone workshops, resources, links to support, educational, treatment, and information services.
  • Foundations for Women's Cancer - Website features: the types of cancer that affect women, cancer risks for women, and search engine to locate gynecologic oncologist; includes links to related sites, publication, and support groups.
  • HealthMatch- HealthMatch's mission is to accelerate medical research by providing a more efficient way of accessing health information. By enabling the patient to have a say in their health conditions and provide an efficient way to find and access clinical trials, and research HealthMatch meets their mission.
  • National Cancer Institute - Website features: information on types of cancer; treatment options, clinical trials; genetics, causes, risk factors, and prevention; testing; and coping and support resources.
  • OncoLink - Website features a collection of web resources on the prevention and treatment of cancer maintained by the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania; includes news, book reviews, and disease and patient support links.
  • Recommended Websites for Cancer Information - The resources listed provide general information for patients, caregivers, and librarians. Members of the MLA Cancer Librarians Section have reviewed these resources for quality (currency, credibility, content, audience, etc.). Some resources will contain information that is the opinion of the author and is not necessarily that of your healthcare providers.   • National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute - features diseases and conditions index, clinical trials information, health assessment tools, healthy recipes, and educational tutorials.

  • Guide to Browsing Web Sites - Millions of consumers are using digital media to get health information, applications to monitor health conditions, and social media to find people who share similar health-related concerns and experiences. Some of this information will be up-to-date and trustworthy; some will not. How can you tell the good from the bad?

  • Women's Eye Health.org - features facts for women, causes of vision loss, eye basics, prevention, and care.

HIV/AIDS

  • AIDSInfo - features the latest federally-approved information on HIV/AIDS clinical research, treatment and prevention, and medical practice guidelines for people living with HIV/AIDS, their families and friends, health care providers, scientists, and researchers.
