Introduction to Library Databases: Home

The TTUHSC El Paso Library subscribes to over hundred online databases. This guide is designed to help you select the appropriate database for your research.

What is a Database?

In Library terminology, a "Database" is any online source of information which has a search engine. Below are common types:

  • Library Catalog indexes all the books and journals owned by or subscribed to by the library. The TTUHSC online catalog is known as KOHA. Library catalog subscribes to complete books and journals; because of this, TTUHSC library also subscribes to...
  • Article Indexes list individual articles within specific academic fields. The journals and books indexed by these databases may or may not be online or available at TTUHSC Library.
  • Online Collections of e-journals are grouped by the publisher or collected in the TTUHSC Library system known as GoldRush. GoldRush is the library catalog of online journal subscriptions. GoldRush knows about Publishers, Journal Titles, Years, Months, Volumes, and Page Numbers. (GoldRush does not know about article titles, keywords, concepts or topics.)

Note: It is important for patrons to be aware that many of our database licenses are selective. TTUHSC Library often subscribes to only a portion of the content available; we don't purchase copies of every book and journal in print nor do we subscribe to every e-book or online journal available. Library materials we do not have may be requested through our Interlibrary Loan (ILLIAD) department.

Importance of Database Selection

  1. Choose the right database(s) - Learn the major features of databases you should look for when selecting a database.
  2. Select useful search terms - Learn how to identify search terms when searching.
  3. Use common advanced search techniques - Most databases look different at first, but most have similar features. For effective research, understanding how to use them is important.
  4. Know what to do when you have too many or few results.
  5. Know how to get a full-text article.

Access to Online Resources

The TTUHSC Library's online subscription resources can always be accessed from computers and wireless networks on campus. Off-Campus Login, however, is restricted to current TTUHSC, students, faculty, and staff who have set up their computer using one of the following methods:

  • Proxy Server - a browser setting which will automatically divert you to TTUHSC Library logon page when you first access a restricted site.  Sign on with your TTUHSC credentials (E-Raider Username/Password)
  • Virtual Private Networking (VPN) - VPN software must be logged on manually before you access a restricted site, but works for all programs on your computer.
